Southern E8A 6915
Title:  Southern E8A 6915
Description:  On Monday 23 August 1976 Southern Railway E8A 6915 was the fourth of four units backing into New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal to couple onto the northbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT when it and the third unit derailed on a switch. After a delay to rerail the locomotives, the train eventually left with three units, and the 6915 was brought to the diesel shop for an inspection, where it was photographed the next day. This was the very last E-unit built for the Southern.

Southern E8A 6915
Title:  Southern E8A 6915
Description:  After the PELICAN was discontinued in June 1968, it was very unusual to find a Southern locomotive at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal during the day; but here is E8A 6915 parked outside the diesel shop in 1976. The unit had been left in New Orleans because of some problem which had to be fixed before it could hit the road. It was wearing the THOMAS JEFFERSON decal it received for America’s bicentennial. The locomotive was built for the New Orleans & Northeastern (NO&NE), but its sublettering was change to AGS after the NO&NE was merged into the Alabama Great Southern in 1969.

Description:  In March of 1971, EMD E-8 9936, still lettered for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy and paired with a sister A-unit, speeds out of Chicagos Union Station with an afternoon passenger train. The EMD E-8 was a 2,250 horsepower A1A-A1A locomotive produced between 1949 and 1954 by GM's Electro-Motive division. 450 of these locomotives were produced. with 38 going to the CB&Q. 58 E-8s have been preserved, making the E-8 one of the best-preserved classes of first-generation diesel power in the U.S.

CB&Q PMC 9845 & E8 9937B
Title:  CB&Q PMC 9845 & E8 9937B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad PMC (Passenger Motor Car) 9845 & E8 9937B at Saint Joseph, Missouri on June 22, 1957 by Dick , Kodachrome by Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. An unfortunate shadow, or perhaps an unfortunate spotting of the gas-electric, at least from a photographic point of view. This photo shows the E unit painted in the as-delivered black "whisker" stripes on the nose. This was the first E8 delivered to the CB&Q (c/n 9674), built in December 1949, retired and sold for scrap Mxy 28, 1975. All the CB&Q E8's and E9's were delivered with black "whiskers", and it was not until 1959 that the red "whiskers" were first applied. This E8 also shows the coupler covers (in the open position) applied to the E's and subsequently removed.

CB&Q E8 9937B
Title:  CB&Q E8 9937B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9937B at the Zephyr Pit near 14th Street in Chicago on Illinois, March 14, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in December 1949 (c/n 96 4) on EMD Order 2012A for 19 E8's, it became BN 9937 and was retired and sold for scrap May 28, 1975. This was the lowest numbered E8 on the CB&Q, presumably the first one delivered. It was built with Aluminum painted side pajels, and during shopping the panels on this locomotive were changed to a stainless steel/plywood sandwich. The E8 was the first passenger locomotive offerd by EMD with the option of dynamic brakes. The Burlington chose not to include thir option, but instead had a 600 gallon water tank installed in the location that would have been occupied by the dynamics, supplementing the 1350 gallon underbody tank. The E8's were delivered with a 55:22 gear ratio, producing a thp speed of 98 mph.
